Research & Planning: Evaluation of college magazine

Are the font sizes correct and appropriate?

The font sizes are correct because the masthead is large and stands out to the audience. Also the cover lines are a reasonable size, they are clear and easy to understand for the viewer.

Does it follow the three colour rule?

My college magazine does follow the three colour rule because, I have used black, white and yellow. I chose these colours because I think black and white work well together and look nice, and I have then used the yellow because I thought that the magazine needed a bit of colour to stop it because so plain.

Can you tell the contents and the cover are from the same magazine?

You can tell that the contents page and the magazine cover are from the same magazine because the colours used on both of these are the same, black, white and yellow. Also the text on the contents page is the same font as the text saying 'college' on the cover page, Also if the contents page was fully complete the three images of the student at the bottom, would be the same student that is on the front cover.

Are the photographs well taken and appropriate?

I believe that the photographs were taken well because the student was stood behind a plain background which was a white wall to go with my three colours and also the lighting in the room was good. The photographs taken were appropriate because the student used suits the audience type.

Are there enough stories on the cover and contents page and are they appropriate?

I believe that that there are enough stories on the contents and cover page. I think this because i didn't want to over fill the cover page with story lines because it would look to cramped and would not be clear to read. Therefore i just used a suitable amount to make it look appropriate and sufficient. I believe that the stories are appropriate because they are giving the students that would be buying the magazine enough information about college life. And also giving them a chance to win prizes and hear a bit of gossip about college.

Research & Planning: Interview

By interviewing people about the draft of my college magazine it helped me know that the magazine looked okay and is appropriate. The interviewers said that the colours looked okay and that the text stood out and it was easy to read. They said that the masthead looked appropriate and that is stood out. They said that they would like to read about what was happening around college and about people in the college. They also said that they would pay for the magazine depending on the price, if it was around 30p then they would buy it. The interviewers then said that the layout was good, it is like a typical layout of a magazine and it is all easy to understand. So now I know i don't need to change anything about my magazine.

Research & Planning: Medium Close-ups

Medium close-up of a flower
Medium close-up of a man
Medium close-up of a squirrel
Medium close-up of a woman

All of these are medium close-up images. I will have to use a medium close up shot of a student on my magazine front cover.

Research & Planning: College Magazine Analysis

I know this is a college magazine because:
  • The Masthead says 'College'.
  • The boy in the Main image looks around the age of 18 and he is carrying exercise books so we know he is in some sort of education, With him looking the age of 18 we know this must be college.
  • The Cover lines saying 'The ultimate spring break escape', 'Make money on campus' and 'college couture' are all related to being at college because people in college have spring break, the way in which they can make money on campus and the word college is used in the headline 'college couture'.
  • Also under the Masthead it states the college address.

Research & Planning: Indesign tutorial

  • Fist I found a review of the film the dark night rises and then copied and pasted it into a word document.
  • I then saved an image off the review to my desktop.
  • I opened Indesign and went to layout and created guidelines for my text.
  • I then went to place and selected the word document that had the film review in and set it out onto the page, leaving room for a title and the image.
  • I then just simply dragged the image off the desktop into Indesign.
  • I used the Text tool on the left hand side to add the title. I changed the colour of the text by highlighting the text and choosing a colour.
  • To add an outline on the text I had to highlight the text and click stroke and change the colour and the width of the outline.
  • to add a background I simply used the rectangle tool, hanged the colour and made a rectangle the size of the page.
  • I then had to click on the rectangle and had to go to object, arrange and then use send back.

Research & Development: Photoshop challenge

  • First I opened up photoshop and created an A4 document.
  • I then used the text tool to add the text, I changed the text to century gothic and made the font size 24. I also changed the font colour to red and centered it in the middle of the page.
  • Then I highlighted the text and added a drop down shadow.
  • I then changed the background colour to a light blue.
  • I then went onto google and found an image of Robert Pattison and saved it to the desktop.
  • I then simply dragged the image into photo shop and placed it under the text.
  • I then used the brush tool to change his hair colour to red.
  • I then did a stroke around the image adding a border.

Research & Development: Airbrushing a model

  • I loaded the image into Photoshop by dragging and dropping the image.
  • I then used the spot healing tool to remove the spots from her face.
  • I then added a layer mask and a blur to make her eyes stand out.
  • I then used the brush tool to change the colour of her lips, hair, cheeks and also to make her eyelashes look longer.

Research & Planning: Manipulated Film Poster

  • First I found an image of a twilight poster and then I found an image of Robert Pattison.
  • I then opened photo shop and simply dragged the two images into separate windows.
  • I then used the Magnetic lasso tool to cut out Robert Pattison's face.
  • Using the move tool I dragged his face over to the poster covering the face on the poster.
  • I then changed the size and rotated the face to where I thought it looked and fitted best.
  • Using the eraser tool i went around the image getting rid of edges making it look like it fits better.
  • I clicked on the image and then went to image adjustments and I used colour balance to change the brightness and the contrast.

Research & Planning: Photoshop CD Tutorial

To create my CD I uploaded the three images into Photoshop. I did this by simply dragging them into Photoshop and opening them into three separate windows so it was easy and clear to see all three. I then used the cutting tool to cut out the CD image to then drag it onto the music note background, to drag the CD onto the background I had to use the move tool. I then changed the size of the CD and I rotated it, I also used colour balance to change the colour of the CD. I then used the magic wand tool on the image of the brass instrument to get rid of the white areas. I then dragged the brass instrument onto the music note background and rotated it and moved it into a position where it fitted and looked appropriate. The colour of the brass instrument did not look like the original colour of a brass instrument so using colour balance I changed the colour to make it look more realistic. I then added some text changing the size and the font. I also rotated the text to make it look better. I then selected the text and went onto layer, and then to layer style to add a drop shadow on the text. I then added an image of some music notes to my CD cover, this helps fill in space and fits well. Then I added a filter to the background called distort wave. Then my CD cover was complete.
